Bushfire Risk

The south east area of Australia is the highest risk area for bushfire/wildfire in the world.  The events of February 2009 in Victoria demonstrated widespread ignorance of the nature of this risk.

Following those events were two significant developments - the Bushfire Royal Commission and the release of the new  AS3959 - Australian Standard for building in bushfire prone areas.  The bushfire risk landscape has changed dramatically.

Although the Commission is ongoing the clear message that has already emerged is that you can't rely on Government or its agencies to save you, your business or your assets.

Assessing your exposure to bushfire risk is complicated and involves consideration of several factors:

  • the ability of infrastructure to withstand an expected fire front
  • the impact on life safety for the various response options
  • maintaining preparedness and infrastructure integrity

Conducting a one off audit against the Standard is not a panacea for managing bushfire risk.  It only deals with buildings - it does not guarantee life safety - it does not even guarantee building safety.
